Marriage is one of the most profound and life-altering decisions a Muslim ever makes. When weighing a proposal, whether arranged or between two individuals who hold mutual affection, turning to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala through Salat al-Istikhara provides spiritual solace, divine clarity, and protection from unseen harm.

What is Istikhara in Islam?

The linguistic meaning of Istikhara is "to seek goodness and guidance." Prophet Muhammad (‎ﷺ) taught his companions the prayer of Istikhara with the same seriousness that he taught them verses of the Holy Quran (Sahih al-Bukhari). Istikhara is not a magical crystal ball; rather, it is a humble supplication entrusting your future, your faith, and your worldly peace to the Omniscient Creator who knows what lies hidden in hearts and time.

Preparation & Prerequisites

Before initiating the prayer of Istikhara, certain essential spiritual prerequisites should be fulfilled:

  • Perform Full Wudu (Ablution): Ensure you are in a state of physical cleanliness, wearing clean clothes, and facing the Qiblah.
  • Clear Your Heart of Bias: True Istikhara requires approaching Allah with an open heart. If you have already rigidly finalized your desire and refuse any alternative, your Istikhara lacks genuine submission.
  • Choose a Quiet Time: While Istikhara can be prayed at any permissible time outside the disliked prayer hours (after Fajr until sunrise, when the sun is at its zenith, and after Asr until sunset), the quietude of late evening or Tahajjud hours offers deep concentration.

Step-by-Step Prayer Instructions

Salat al-Istikhara consists of two optional (Nafl) units of prayer followed by the specific prophetic supplication:

  1. The Intention (Niyyah): Make the silent intention in your heart: "I intend to pray two rak'ahs for seeking Allah's guidance through Istikhara for this marriage proposal."
  2. First Rak'ah: Recite Surah Al-Fatihah, followed by any chapter of the Quran. Many scholars recommend Surah Al-Kafirun (Chapter 109).
  3. Second Rak'ah: In the second unit, recite Surah Al-Fatihah followed by Surah Al-Ikhlas (Chapter 112).
  4. Completion of Prayer: Complete the prayer with the Tashahhud, Durood Ibrahim, and the final Salam to both sides.
  5. Recitation of the Dua: Raise your hands respectfully and recite the authentic Istikhara supplication taught by the Messenger of Allah (‎ﷺ).

The Core Supplication (Excerpt of Meaning)

"O Allah, I seek Your counsel through Your knowledge and I seek strength through Your power, and I ask of Your immense bounty. For You have power and I have none, and You know and I know not, and You are the Knower of the unseen..."

When you reach the phrase "...hadhal-amra" (this matter), mention the specific person and marriage proposal by name in your thoughts or words.

Understanding Signs and Results After Istikhara

A widespread misconception across South Asia and abroad is the belief that an Istikhara must result in a vivid dream showing specific colors (green for good, red for bad). Classical Islamic jurists have clearly stated that dreams are neither guaranteed nor a requirement of Istikhara.

Rather, the true outcomes of Istikhara manifest through:

  • Ease in Circumstances (Taysir): Discussions between both families flow harmoniously, practical hurdles dissipate naturally, and both individuals feel contentment and respect.
  • Barriers and Closing Doors: If the proposal is not spiritually or emotionally beneficial, unforeseen yet insurmountable obstacles arise, or mutual peace diminishes.
  • Internal Peace (Inshirah al-Sadr): An enduring, quiet reassurance and certainty settling into your chest regarding the decision.
